Frequently asked questions

What exactly is removed?

For JPG, all EXIF, XMP and IPTC data, comments and attached extra images (some phones attach a second version of the image with its own data). For PNG, text, EXIF, timestamps and unknown chunks; for WebP, EXIF and XMP. Only the image data and what is needed for display remain.

Does the image quality get worse?

No. The image data is copied byte by byte, not saved again. The colour profile stays if “Keep colour profile” is switched on; it contains no personal information.

Why is the orientation kept?

Phones often store portrait photos in landscape and note the rotation in the EXIF data. Without this note the photo would lie on its side. With “Keep orientation” the tool writes back a tiny EXIF containing only the rotation, without camera, date or location.
