Frequently asked questions

How does the tool spot typos?

By the check digits (positions 3 and 4) according to ISO 13616: a wrong character or two swapped neighbours are almost always detected. It also checks the length, which is fixed per country (SWIFT IBAN registry). Only the bank knows whether the account exists.

What is a QR-IBAN?

A Swiss or Liechtenstein IBAN whose institution ID (positions 5 to 9) is between 30000 and 31999. It is only valid for QR-bills with a QR reference; for normal transfers use the regular IBAN (SIX, “QR-IID and QR-IBAN”).

Where do the bank details come from, and is the IBAN sent?

Bank, town and BIC come from the SIX bank master data, which SIX publishes for free use, without guarantee. It is loaded as a file; your IBAN is only checked in your browser and not sent.
