Art
“Characters” is meant for a password manager, “Sentence” for passwords you have to remember.
Remember the sentence, type the password: the first letter of each word, the full time and the punctuation mark at the end. Upper and lower case as in the sentence.
The strength only counts the randomness that ends up in the password: first letters, time and punctuation mark, not the whole sentence.
Suggestions
The bits tell you how many possibilities there are: 80 bits are 2 to the power of 80. From 80 bits on, a password is considered very strong.
Frequently asked questions
How random are the passwords?
The randomness comes from your browser’s random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues), which is also used for encryption. Each character, and for the sentence each word and the time, is drawn uniformly, without bias.
Is the password stored or sent?
No. It is created in your browser and is neither stored nor sent to our server. Close the page and it’s gone.
Characters or sentence?
For a password manager, “Characters”: a long password from all character groups is the strongest. “Sentence” is for passwords you have to remember (sentence method): you remember the sentence and type the first letters, the time and the punctuation mark. The strength only counts what ends up in the password, so it is clearly lower than a long character password.
