Frequently asked questions

How is counting done?

A word is a sequence of letters or digits. “e-mail-address” and “1’234.50” each count as one word, “e. g.” as two. Characters are counted as you see them: an emoji is one character. Sentences are estimated; abbreviations like “e. g.” and dates like “1. August” don’t end a sentence.

Where do reading and speaking times come from?

From average values: around 230 words per minute when reading on screen and around 130 words per minute when speaking. Technical texts take longer.

Is my text stored?

No. The text stays in your browser and is gone as soon as you close the page.
