Frequently asked questions
When median instead of average?
When single outliers distort the picture, for example with salaries or rents. The median is the middle value of the sorted list; one very high value hardly moves it.
Sample or population?
Sample (divided by n − 1, STDEV.S in Excel) if your numbers are only part of all values, which is usually the case. Population (divided by n, STDEV.P) if you really have all the values.
How are the quartiles calculated?
As in Excel with QUARTILE.INC: the position in the sorted list is (n − 1) × 0.25 or × 0.75, with linear interpolation in between.
