Frequently asked questions
Where does the information come from?
From the SECO list of cantonal public holidays treated like Sundays (as of 12.12.2024), and for Aargau and Zurich from the cantons’ own information. Further days from the older list of the Federal Office of Justice (2011) are marked “please check with the canton”. The cantonal laws are authoritative; municipalities may have their own public holidays.
Do I get these days off?
That is governed by your employment contract, collective labour agreement or staff regulations. Under the Federal Constitution, only 1 August is treated like a Sunday and paid. The cantons can treat at most eight further public holidays like Sundays (Art. 20a Labour Act); these are the days “throughout the canton” or “only in parts of the canton”.
How do I get the public holidays into my calendar?
With “Calendar file (.ics)”: Outlook, Apple Calendar and Google Calendar can import the file. Each public holiday becomes an all-day event that doesn’t show as busy.
