Frequently asked questions
What is Unix time?
The seconds since 1 January 1970, 00:00 UTC, without leap seconds. Many programs and databases store points in time this way, JavaScript and Java often in milliseconds.
Seconds or milliseconds?
The tool detects it by size: numbers up to 11 digits count as seconds, longer ones as milliseconds. You can also choose the unit yourself.
What is the year 2038 problem?
Anyone who stores Unix time as a signed 32-bit number only gets as far as 2’147’483’647, which is 19 January 2038, 03:14:07 UTC. After that the counter jumps to the year 1901. With 64 bits the problem doesn’t exist.
How do I filter logs by a time range?
Choose the days under “Time range for logs”: you get start and end in seconds and milliseconds plus ready-made filters for SQL, Splunk, KQL (Sentinel, Defender), Elasticsearch and journalctl. The end is the next day at 00:00, hence “less than”.
